Wally's Reading Program
Summer Reading Program
Our Summer Program, sponsored by McDonalds, Texas Pete, Wachovia and Quality Inn and Suites at Hanes Mall has now reached over 30,000 students and 70 schools on an annual basis.
Celebrate Reading with the Warthogs
Wally’s Reading Program uses the analogy of moving around a baseball diamond to provide local elementary and middle school students with an incentive-based framework to help them accomplish reading goals established by their school.
The Diamond
Students begin the program at home plate. After 2 weeks of reading the set goals, they advance to first base. After 2 more weeks, they may move up to second base, and then third base, and finally home plate. No student may go on to second base without completing the reading requirements for first, and so on. At each base, students will receive a reward from the Reading Program sponsor, McDonald’s .

- Hot dog
- Drink
- Souvenir
- Gift from McDonald’s
- Recognition at an on-field ceremony and parade prior to the game
Reading Goals
Each school sets its own criteria for advancing from base to base. The students must reach all 4 reading goals to reach home plate and receive a free ticket to a Warthog’s baseball game. Examples of criteria include a certain number of books to read, a certain number of pages to read, or a certain number of minutes to read each night.
Reward Distribution
At the start of the program, each school will be given McDonald’s rewards for first and second base equal to the total student enrollment in the program. As third base approaches, each school should contact the Warthogs with an updated number of approximate McDonald’s rewards necessary for third base and home plate. Those rewards will be distributed to the schools midway through the program, along with order forms for students to take home to their parents. Schools will then collect the order forms back from the students and deliver them to the Warthogs. Students must reach ALL 4 READING GOALS to win a FREE ticket to a Warthogs game.
Tickets
Schools will receive a personalized ticket order form from the Warthogs to be given to students who complete the program. Parents can order additional family tickets for the discounted rate of $5 each. Students will receive vouchers for their hot dogs, drinks, and souvenirs with their ticket. All of your school’s tickets will be in the general admission bleacher seats. All participating teachers and staff members will receive 2 free general admission tickets to the game. Teachers and staff do not need to fill out order forms. Teacher and staff tickets will be given to schools along with the processed student orders.
Wally’s Coming
Wally’s hitting the road for his annual Reading Program tour! Make sure to invite Wally to your school to kick off your reading program with a fun-filled assembly! The presentation will be prepared by the Warthogs and approximately 30 minutes long. All your school will need to do is arrange a time and place with a microphone and sound system with CD player (if available).
Registration
Complete the registration form and return it to the Warthogs. The Warthogs will call to verify your registration and set up your game date and visit from Wally. Not all schools are guaranteed their first choice game date as seating is limited. Please have a second date in mind. You will receive a confirmation packet with a schedule for your progression through the program for the School Coordinator and for each classroom. Schools will collect order forms and money for extra family tickets from the students and deliver them to the Warthogs. The Warthogs will process the orders and return the tickets to the schools. Tickets will be delivered within 2 weeks. Each student’s ticket will be in an envelope labeled with their name and separated by classroom. All orders processed through the schools in this manner will be filled with general admission bleacher seats.
